The real reason why your new year’s resolution didn’t stick.
Goals are great. We should all have them…but are they enough?
You probably started 2020 feeling determined and super motivated.
You told yourself “this year is going to be different!”
Fast forward 4 weeks and the grim reality of the day to day grind, and what stands between you and your goals has all but crushed that willpower.
Bleak I know, but according to the stats, also true for most of us.
So, why does this always happen?
Is it that you set your sights too high?
Nope.
It’s that they’re too far away!
You see, as humans we’re conditioned to always opt for immediate gratification over long term.
It’s why you so often give in to temptation and over-indulge, even though you know you’ll regret it afterwards.
So, with that in mind, wouldn’t it be amazing if we could get immediate gratification from exercise?
Well, turns out you can – you’ve just not being doing it right!
All you need is two things:
1. An effective workout that challenges you so you feel a sense of accomplishment
2. You need to have fun!
Tick those two off, and you’ll feel that immediate gratification…meaning you keep it up AND in time (consistency wins remember) reach that longer term goal as well!
Double win.
Now I know what you’re thinking…easy for me to say.
But it is exactly the same for me. I’ve tried certain things and just couldn’t get on with them.
Long distance running? No thanks.Spin? Kill me now.
When you don’t enjoy something it’s like running at a brick wall repeatedly – you’re never going to look forward to it or keep it up.
So, find something physically challenging that makes you move, but that leaves you with a smile on your face…then keep doing it.
If you hate the gym, quit the gym.If you hate running, for the love of whoever stop running.if you’re spending your pilates workouts imagining ways to kill your instructor, it might be time to move on.
There are so many different ways to get active these days, just do some research and see what grabs you.
So, if your new year’s resolution has already fallen by the wayside, don’t just give up.
Find something different, something that sounds fun…but a little bit scary.
Give it a try, let me know what you find and how you get on!
